About
Type Here is an Aotearoa typography poster competition, focused on contemporary and expressive typography.
Aotearoa is a place rich in storytelling, from epic mythologies to emotional journeys, our stories carry the very DNA of our nation. Type Here celebrates these personal stories, expressed through language, culture and typography.
Theme
Our theme, Wāwāhia Te Tahā (Break The Calabash), is framed by the whakataukī ‘ko te mahi a te tamariki, he wāwāhi tahā’ (the activities of children break calabashes). It speaks to the inquisitive nature of tamariki as they explore the world and its objects, necessarily breaking precious items within it.
Aotearoa is a bold young nation of many voices, openly questioning dominant systems of power. We go ‘against the grain’ not because it is easy, but because it is right. From the gutsy navigation of Te Moana Nui-a-Kiwa, in search of new homelands, to rebelling against the classism embedded within our European heritage, we are a people accustomed to stepping into the unknown.
In this spirit, our theme foregrounds risk-taking and experimentation. We encourage the application of typography in unexpected and inventive ways. Because true progress requires risk.
